Seasons in Santa Teresa: When to Visit and What to Expect

Santa Teresa, on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, is a year-round destination. the experience you have will vary greatly depending on when you visit. From sun-drenched surf sessions to lush green landscapes after tropical rains. each season offers its own unique charm.

Dry Season (High Season) – December to April

The dry season is the most popular time to visit Santa Teresa. Expect plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures (28–32°C / 82–90°F). The skies are clear, the waves are consistent and the golden sunsets are unforgettable.

This is the ideal time for:

  • Surfing in perfect conditions

  • Beach lounging and swimming

  • Long horseback rides along the shore

  • Outdoor yoga and fitness classes

  • Sunset cocktails with your feet in the sand

Because it’s peak season, book your accommodation and surf lessons in advance. Prices for hotels and tours are generally higher during these months.

Green Season (Low to Mid Season) – May to November

The green season is when Santa Teresa’s jungle comes alive. Occasional afternoon showers keep the landscape lush and vibrant and the slower pace means fewer crowds and better deals.

May to August brings plenty of sunny mornings followed by short refreshing rains in the late afternoon or evening. September and October see heavier rains.

This is the ideal time for:

  • Exploring waterfalls like Montezuma without the crowds

  • Enjoying quiet, uncrowded beaches

  • Surfing bigger, more powerful swells (best for experienced surfers)

  • Taking advantage of off-season rates on hotels and rentals

  • Photographing the lush, green scenery and dramatic sky

Pack a light rain jacket and waterproof bag for your electronics. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended, especially if you plan to explore beyond Santa Teresa.

Best of Both Worlds

Late November and early December, as well as late April and early May, offer the perfect balance — good weather, smaller crowds and moderate prices. The ocean is warm, the waves are friendly for all levels and the sunsets can be some of the year’s most spectacular.

No matter when you visit Santa Teresa, you’ll find its charm intact: world-class surf, stunning beaches, and a laid-back community that welcomes you with open arms. Your choice of season simply shapes the version of paradise you’ll get to experience.
