Chocolate, Cacao & Coffee
The Brown Gold of Costa Rica

Costa Rica is famous for its lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and incredible biodiversity — but for many, its true treasure lies in the rich flavors of its land. Known as the “brown gold” of the country, cacao and coffee are more than crops; they’re an essential part of Costa Rican culture, history, and daily life.

The Roots of Cacao in Costa Rica

Cacao has deep roots in Costa Rican heritage. Long before it became the sweet chocolate treat we know today, cacao was revered by the Chorotega and Bribri indigenous peoples, who used its beans as currency and in ceremonial drinks. The humid lowland regions of Limón, Talamanca, and Upala are home to some of the country’s finest cacao farms.

Costa Rican cacao is celebrated for its complex flavor profile  notes of tropical fruit, floral undertones, and a natural creaminess. Unlike mass-produced chocolate, local producers often grow cacao organically, harvest by hand and ferment and dry the beans under the sun to develop their rich flavor.

The Coffee Legacy

Coffee cultivation in Costa Rica began in the late 1700s, and by the 19th century, it was the country’s primary export. Today, Costa Rican coffee is regarded as some of the best in the world, prized for its bright acidity, balanced body, and sweet, clean finish.

The central highlands including Tarrazú, Heredia, and Alajuela offer ideal conditions for coffee. volcanic soil, high altitudes and a perfect balance of sun and rain. Many farms follow sustainable, organic practices, hand-picking only the ripest red cherries to ensure quality from plant to cup.
